The fist is known worldwide as a symbol of the resistance; we are aware it may have other interpretations as well! As the LGBTQ community has been under attack by some on the right we felt it apt to create a lavender solidarity fist resist pin. The color lavender has long been associated with the LGBTQ/gay rights movement in general.
In the 50s we had the Lavender Scare. "The lavender scare refers to a witch hunt and the mass firings of homosexual people in the 1950s from the United States government. It contributed to and paralleled the anti-communist campaign known as McCarthyism and the Second Red Scare."
A couple decades later brought the Lavender Menace. "The phrase "lavender menace" was coined by NOW leader Betty Friedan, who used it at a NOW meeting in 1969, claiming that outspoken lesbians were a threat to the feminist movement, arguing that the presence of these women distracted from the goals of gaining economic and social equality for women."
"The Lavender Menace or revolution was an informal group of lesbian radical feminists formed to protest the exclusion of lesbians and lesbian issues from the feminist movement at the Second Congress to Unite Women in New York City on May 1, 1970."
